Doorways in Drumorty: Restored Classics to Go Edition

This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design. In Drumorty, where gossip is a public force and private longing is never quite private, ordinary lives become comic dramas of pride, courtship, and heartbreak. Old Kirsty Fraser lives for funerals and the glory of her famous "fits," only to fear she has been slighted when Sandy MacNab dies; her anxious vigil, and the rival spectacle of Mistress MacNab's own collapse, turn mourning into a battle for status, dignity, and the right to be remembered. Nearby, Jessie MacLean endures fifteen years of waiting for Jock Sclessor, her hopes measured in bonnet strings and church walks until resignation and proposal arrive almost at once, bringing bittersweet relief. The village's romances are just as fraught for Bella Tocher, whose brief courtship ends in disgrace, and whose suffering awakens Jessie's hidden compassion. Jean MacFarlane, meanwhile, burns with resentment after Sandy Morrison rejects her, and her bitterness, fantasies of revenge, and hard-won self-reproach reveal the cost of wounded pride. Yet even in this close-knit world of rivalry and humiliation, affection flickers: Jean's interest in the new tailor James MacGregor, and the village's watchful eye on every glance and gesture, keep hope alive amid the laughter.
