Shadow of Her: When He Realized Too Late
After marriage, Harrison and I slept in separate rooms. At first, I asked if I could move into the master bedroom. He refused me without hesitation.
"No need. Audrey would mind."
"If it weren't for you back then, we wouldn't have come to this point. Let's just leave it as it is now."
Audrey was his first love. I stood there stunned, only managing to say "okay" after a long while. Later, I thought—anyway, this marriage was just to help my parents' family business survive a liquidity crisis during their bankruptcy, while conveniently solving his family company's tricky federal lawsuit. Just a transaction. Once everything was settled, we'd naturally go our separate ways.
From then on, I never brought it up again. For the next three years, he brought her to every occasion he attended. He brought her to charity galas, company annual meetings, even to family dinners for my mother's birthday—she was the one standing beside him.
Everyone wondered who was truly the mistress of this house. Now it was settled. Everything that needed resolving was resolved. It was time for me to leave.
