Lifeguard: Absurd Tales and Minimals, #1

This collection of short fiction has no interest in behaving itself. (Absurd, Symbolic and Metaphorical!)

A doctor laughs at funerals and weeps at weddings, and can't explain either. A pharmacist and a beggar trade a joke about death that isn't really a joke. A man offers half his life for a single hair from a stranger's mustache. A flock of sheep, halfway up a mountain, argues about fear, fate, and whether the shepherd can be trusted. A woman becomes a cat slowly enough that her husband almost doesn't notice until it's too late to matter.

None of it resolves the way genre fiction has trained you to expect. There's no chosen one, no love triangle, no hero completing a Valuable Arc by the final page. What you'll find instead sits closer to the Persian short story at its sharpest: compressed, oblique, often very funny, often devastating in four sentences flat — fiction that trusts you to sit with an ending instead of being handed one.

These stories move between absurdity and tenderness so quickly you won't notice the ground shifting until you're already standing somewhere else. Some are barely a page. None of them let go easily.

If you're after comfort food, this isn't it. If you want fiction that behaves the way literature is supposed to — precise, strange, and entirely unwilling to explain itself — start here.
