Mutisi: Father Of A Nation
Mutisi: Father of a Nation
The Hungwe M'tisi Story So Far; and an Invitation to Complete It
Every Hungwe family, whether in Chipinge, Gutu, Shurugwi, or across the border in Mozambique, traces itself back to one name: Nheva, a hunter beside the Zambezi. From him came three sons, a great southern migration to the Mozambican coast, and a long return journey home under the leadership of Sakunara. At Chipinge, on the eastern edge of Zimbabwe, two men chose to remain behind rather than press on toward the interior: Mutisi and Mutetwa. From that decision, three centuries ago, the M'tisi clan was born.
This book tells that story from its deepest roots to the present day: the Fish Eagle totem and what it means to carry it; the migration that scattered Hungwe descendants across four countries under different names, Matapira, Nyoni, Marunga, M'tisi; the founding of the clan at Chipinge and the meaning carried in Mutisi's own name; the totem, taboo, and praise poetry (chidao) still spoken at gatherings today; and the kindred branches, including the officially recognized Chief Ndanga chieftaincy of Shurugwi, that share the same ancestral root.
It is also, deliberately, an honest book. Where community tradition and documented history agree, this book says so plainly.
Where a cherished claim, about Mapungubwe, about the Zimbabwe Birds, about deep ancestral connections, reaches further than the present evidence can support, this book says that plainly too, using a simple evidence key introduced in the opening pages: family tradition, wider oral tradition, historical documentation, archaeology, linguistics, and genetics, each named for what it can and cannot establish.
That honesty is what makes the invitation at this book's heart possible. Between Mutisi the founder and the present generation lie four to six missing generations, a gap this book names rather than hides. It closes not with a finished family tree but with a direct call to every M'tisi son and daughter: sit with your elders, ask the questions this book provides, and help complete the history that begins here.
Whether you carry the surname Mutisi, M'tisi, Mutetwa, Chasura, Ndanga, or one of the wider Hungwe family's regional names, this book is written for you: a foundation to build from, and an invitation to help finish building it.
