His beloved wife died four years ago. He knows he can never risk the pain of loving and losing a woman again.

Now, her mother sends her south from Philadelphia worried about her future. Tess is obsessed with earning her living as an artist. This was unheard of for a woman in colonial America. Tess’s mother hopes Aunt Mary will be able to reason with her.

Jack and Tess meet by chance on the York River. It becomes the magic setting for the wild attraction they feel for one another. Both fear falling in love. Jack’s fear comes from the pain he’s felt since his wife died. Tess fears love and marriage will mean giving up being an artist.
