Dr. Henrietta O. Murray
1750 England: a prejudice, slaveowner's daughter, Henrietta (Etta) Murray, has a displeasing friendship with his property, Sophie.
Six-year-old Etta is an adolescent when a family friend's abuse of a female slave is understood as sinful. Etta is the first woman to study psychiatry, joins a women's coalition to help educate slaves, the mentally disturbed, and women's inequality. Yet, a blasphemous relationship with a woman opposes scripture and men, complicating her social reform efforts. Still, her impulsive character protects slaves, and occasionally, fibs twist the truth in her favour. Indeed, an untraditional Christian white woman!
Etta's family believes success is through traditions, where the family name is respected, and Sophie is kept in chains. Etta need only be ashamed of being lesbian, denounce her beliefs, faith and life's purpose! All for the insistence on having an unthinkable friendship with a slave!?!
