Women, Space, and Resurgence in Indigenous Feminist Writing
Women, Space, and Resurgence in Indigenous Feminist Writing explores the poetics and politics of space in 21st-century Indigenous women's writing from the United States and Canada, published in English. It offers an analysis of selected novels by Linda LeGarde Grover (Bois Forte Band of the Minnesota Chippewa), Louise Erdrich (Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa), Tracey Lindberg (Cree), and katherena vermette (Métis), examining their critique of settler colonial spatial organization in North America and their narrative (re)mappings that actively produce Indigenous spaces.
The volume examines spatial arrangements that reflect and sustain the marginalization, dehumanization, and erasure of Indigenous women. At the same time, it analyzes how Indigenous feminist writing unsettles these colonial mappings by centering relationality and futurity, transcending settler impositions. It focuses on the literary means of enacting Indigenous resurgence as acts of resistance to the framework of reconciliation and to settler formulations of justice and redress.
Ultimately, Women, Space, and Resurgence in Indigenous Feminist Writing provides readers with critical tools to understand Indigenous feminist literature and its role in addressing the ongoing impacts of settler colonialism on Indigenous communities and spaces.
