Spirituality: The Basics

Spirituality: The Basics offers an accessible guide to the diverse expressions and practices of contemporary spirituality, moving beyond rigid definitions to explore how it functions across secular and nonreligious contexts as a vital resource for purpose, meaning, and belonging. Presenting spirituality not as a fixed essence but as a dynamic mode of engagement, the book examines how individuals cultivate selfhood, relate to others and the natural world, and pursue holistic well-being, while also grappling with complexities such as romanticization, commodification, and cultural appropriation. By tracing both historical roots and evolving meanings-particularly as traditional religious affiliation declines and spiritual expressions expand-the book encourages readers to consider not what spirituality is, but what it does: how it shapes lives, relationships, professions, and institutions in tangible ways, with enduring connections to compassion, ethical action, and social engagement. Topics and discussions include:

• The nature and contours of spirituality
• Distinctions and overlaps between spirituality, religion, and secularity
• Spirituality and/as compassion
• Spirituality, virtuous living, and social transformation
• Spirituality and well-being
• Neoliberal spirituality, commodification, and issues of appropriation
• Spirituality in healthcare and systems of care
• Spirituality, social work, and person-centered practice
• Spirituality, mental health, and contemplative approaches
• Spirituality and holistic education
• Nature spirituality and environmental responsibility
• Spirituality in digital life and artificial intelligence

Spirituality: The Basics serves as an ideal entry point for readers seeking to understand how spirituality functions across personal, relational, and professional domains. It will be especially valuable for undergraduate students, those who identify as "spiritual but not religious," as well as anyone interested in the evolving role of spirituality in contemporary life.
