Christi Belcourt: This Painting Is a Mirror
$50.00
The most substantial monograph to date on the celebrated Métis artist reflects on the continued relevance of her work in a time of profound ecological and social change.
Featuring 100 full-colour reproductions of Belcourt's paintings, including her largest compositions to date, Christi Belcourt: This Painting Is a Mirror traces the development of her distinctive visual language across paintings spanning her thirty-year career. Edited by Tarah Hogue, with contributions from Maria Campbell, Sherry Farrell Racette, and Robin Wall Kimmerer, it presents new scholarship and reflections on Belcourt's work, foregrounding Métis knowledge and aesthetic practice alongside the plant relations that are central to her art and worldview.
Belcourt's singular approach to painting emerged from Métis beadwork traditions, close observation of the natural world, and longstanding relationships with the lands and waters that have shaped her life and practice. Drawing upon the structuring logic of beadwork, she builds her paintings through the accumulation of thousands of individually painted dots which gather over time into fields of relation, connecting the individual to the collective, the earthly to the cosmic, and the seen world to those dimensions that exceed it. At once intimate and monumental, this publication follows the evolution of Belcourt's mark-making, from early paintings shaped by Woodland School influences to increasingly complex compositions that reveal the interconnected systems that sustain life.
Taking its title from a 2012 painting, Christi Belcourt: This Painting Is a Mirror considers how Belcourt's work invites viewers to see themselves in relation to the living world. Through sustained attention to the connections that bind all forms of life, Belcourt's paintings invite viewers to locate themselves within the worlds they bring into view.
This book is co-published with Remai Modern, which will present an exhibition of the same name from June 18, 2027, to January 2, 2028.
