Performance Fabric for Leggings & Activewear

Our Performance Legging & Activewear Fabric is a substantial nylon-spandex performance knit featuring 4-way stretch with approximately 60% crosswise stretch and 50% lengthwise stretch. Designed for sewing leggings, athletic wear, workout clothing and fitted sportswear, it provides excellent flexibility in both directions for garments that move with the body.

With a weight of 230 gsm and a high 25% spandex content, this fabric is an excellent choice for close-fitting garments that require stretch and flexibility. Its substantial weight makes it particularly well suited to leggings and other fitted athletic garments where a lightweight activewear knit may not provide enough body.

The smooth stretch construction and nylon-rich composition make this a versatile choice for creating a coordinated handmade activewear wardrobe, from classic leggings to fitted tops, shorts and sportswear.

Sewing Recommendations

For best results, use a stretch needle and a stretch-compatible stitch or serger. A stretch or polyester thread can be used depending on your project and sewing method.

Always check the stretch requirements of your sewing pattern before cutting, particularly for close-fitting garments such as leggings.

Care Instructions

We recommend pre-washing your fabric using the same method you intend to use for the finished garment. To help preserve the stretch fibres, avoid excessive heat when washing and drying.

Legging & Activewear Fabric FAQ What is the best fabric for sewing leggings?

Stretch knit fabrics containing nylon and spandex are an excellent choice for sewing leggings. A substantial fabric with good stretch provides the flexibility required for a close-fitting garment while offering more body than a lightweight knit. This 230 gsm nylon-spandex fabric was selected specifically for leggings and activewear.

Is this fabric suitable for workout leggings?

Yes. This stretch performance knit is particularly well suited to workout leggings, yoga pants, bike shorts and other fitted athletic garments.

Is 230 gsm a good weight for leggings?

Yes. At 230 gsm, this is a substantial stretch knit that works especially well for leggings and fitted athletic bottoms. Fabric weight is only one factor when choosing legging fabric, so always compare the fabric's stretch with the requirements of your sewing pattern.

Can I use this fabric for yoga pants?

Yes. Its stretch and substantial weight make it suitable for sewing fitted yoga pants, leggings and similar activewear styles.

Can I use this fabric for bike shorts?

Yes. This performance stretch fabric can be used for fitted bike shorts and athletic shorts when its stretch is compatible with your sewing pattern.

What needle should I use for sewing activewear fabric?

A stretch needle is recommended for highly elastic synthetic knit fabrics. Choose the needle size according to your machine, fabric layers and project, and test your stitch on a scrap of fabric before sewing your garment.
