Fabric Description

Our 12 oz Oil Waxed Canvas is a heavyweight, oil-treated cotton fabric designed for durability, weather resistance, and long-term use. The oil-wax finish gives the fabric a rich, matte appearance and a distinctive depth of color that evolves beautifully over time.

Firm and structured, this canvas is highly resistant to wear and tear, making it ideal for functional and utilitarian projects. Due to its dense weave and waxed finish, it can be slightly more challenging to sew than untreated canvas, but with the right tools, it delivers exceptional, professional results.

Key Characteristics of Oil Waxed Canvas
  • Water-resistant and suitable for outdoor use

  • Mold-resistant due to oil-wax treatment

  • Extremely durable, wear-resistant, and tear-resistant

  • Develops a natural patina with use

  • Creases, marks, and color variation are intentional and part of its character

Patina & Color Evolution (Important)

Oil-waxed canvas naturally darkens over time compared to its original state. Creases, folds, and surface marks will appear with use and handling. This evolving patina is a defining feature of waxed canvas and contributes to its unique, lived-in look.

Each piece will age differently. This is not a defect, but an intended characteristic of the fabric.

Heat-Reactive Surface (Scratch Recovery)

Light surface marks and scratches can often be softened by gently warming the fabric.

  • Use warm air (for example, a hair dryer)

  • The wax will redistribute, reducing the appearance of marks

This is a normal behavior of oil-waxed fabrics.

What Can You Sew With This Fabric?

This 12 oz oil waxed canvas is perfect for:

  • Tote bags and handbags

  • Backpacks and travel bags

  • Tool rolls and utility pouches

  • Aprons and workwear accessories

  • Jackets, vests, and outerwear

  • Outdoor gear and protective covers

  • Laptop sleeves and camera bags

Sewing Recommendations

Because of its weight and waxed finish, we recommend the following:

Needle: Use a heavy-duty or denim needle (minimum size 100/16)

Thread: Strong polyester or bonded nylon thread

Machine: Domestic machines can handle it, but sew slowly and steadily

Clips over pins: Fabric clips are preferred, as pins may leave permanent holes

Test first: Always test stitches on a scrap piece before sewing your project

Cutting Instructions (Important)

Cutting waxed canvas can dull blades

  • Use older scissors or a rotary cutter reserved for heavy fabrics

  • Avoid using your best or newest fabric scissors

  • The waxed finish and density may damage or dull sharp blades over time

This is normal for oil-treated fabrics and not a defect.

Care Instructions (Very Important)
  • Do not machine wash or dry clean

  • Spot clean only with cold water and a soft cloth

  • Do not use detergents or harsh chemicals

  • Air dry only — avoid heat

  • Do not expose to direct heat or prolonged direct sunlight

  • Creases, marks, and color variation are natural and add character

  • Use wax blocks for maintenance or to restore water resistance. Re-wax if needed to restore water resistance over time

  • Patina Notice: Marks, folds, and color variation are normal with oil waxed canvas and will evolve over time. This is part of the fabric’s character and appeal.
Due to the different color variations of each monitor and mobile device, we cannot guarantee the color will exactly match what you see online.
