This premium yarn-dyed cotton flannel fabric features a rich purple and blue plaid accented with green and black, creating a dimensional colour palette with plenty of visual depth. Its classic plaid design has a slightly modern feel thanks to the combination of cool purple and blue tones with deeper contrasting shades.

The brushed cotton surface gives the fabric the familiar softness associated with quality flannel while retaining enough body for garments that benefit from some structure. It is particularly well suited to overshirts, flannel shirts, shirt-jackets and casual jackets, where you want a fabric that feels comfortable but still allows collars, cuffs, pockets and button plackets to hold their shape.

This fabric sits beautifully between a lightweight shirting and a heavier outerwear fabric. It has enough substance for cool-weather layering pieces without the bulk of a true coating fabric, making it a versatile choice for garments that can transition through fall, winter and early spring.

Because the plaid is yarn-dyed rather than printed, the individual yarns are coloured before weaving and the plaid is created as part of the fabric itself. This gives the design greater depth and makes the pattern visible on both sides of the cloth. It is an especially attractive feature for garments with rolled cuffs, open collars or other details where the reverse side may occasionally be visible.

The woven construction also creates subtle colour variations where the different yarns intersect, giving the plaid a richer and more dimensional appearance than a surface-printed design. The result is a classic fabric that works equally well for traditional flannel garments and more contemporary sewing patterns.

Sewing with plaid flannel

When cutting a plaid fabric, taking a little extra time to match the horizontal and vertical lines can make a noticeable difference in the finished garment. Pay particular attention to centre fronts, side seams, patch pockets and other highly visible areas.

For shirts, overshirts and jackets, smaller pattern pieces such as pocket flaps, back yokes or cuffs can also be cut on the bias. Turning the plaid diagonally creates an intentional contrast while eliminating the need to perfectly match the plaid on those particular pieces.

Plaid matching tip: Consider purchasing additional fabric beyond the yardage recommended by your sewing pattern if you plan to match the plaid. The amount of extra fabric required will depend on the size of the repeat, garment size and number of pattern pieces.

Care instructions

Machine wash cold
Tumble dry low or hang to dry
Prewash before cutting
Iron at medium heat, preferably on the reverse side

We recommend pre-washing your fabric using the same method you intend to use for the finished garment. Cotton fabrics may experience some shrinkage during their first wash, so prewashing before cutting is especially important for fitted garments.

Due to the different color variations of each monitor and mobile device, we cannot guarantee the color will exactly match what you see online.
