This premium mauve and orange windowpane cotton flannel fabric brings a warm, modern twist to a timeless plaid. The muted mauve background is crossed with contrasting orange lines, creating an oversized windowpane pattern that feels distinctive without being difficult to wear.
Made from 100% cotton with a substantial 260 gsm weight, this flannel has a soft brushed hand while retaining enough body and structure for garments that need more presence than a lightweight shirting. It is an excellent choice for fall and winter sewing projects, from classic button-up shirts to overshirts and lightweight jackets.
Unlike printed plaid, this fabric is yarn-dyed, meaning the coloured yarns are woven directly into the fabric to create the windowpane design. The pattern is therefore visible on both sides of the fabric, giving your handmade garments a more polished and premium finish.
The combination of mauve and warm orange makes this colourway particularly beautiful for autumn wardrobes. Pair it with denim, corduroy, canvas or solid cotton fabrics for an easy-to-coordinate handmade look.
What Can You Sew With This Cotton Flannel? At 260 gsm, this premium cotton flannel works beautifully for projects where you want softness with a little structure. We especially recommend it for:
- Overshirts and shackets
- Button-up shirts
- Shirt jackets
- Lightweight fall jackets
- Structured dresses
- Skirts
- Casual trousers
- Matching fall sets
In a yarn-dyed fabric, the individual yarns are coloured before the fabric is woven. This creates a plaid that is woven into the fabric rather than simply printed onto its surface. The result is a classic textile appearance with the windowpane design visible from both sides.
FAQWhat sewing machine needle should I use for this cotton flannel?
A Universal needle in size 80/12 or 90/14 is a good choice for this 260 gsm cotton flannel. Choose the size according to the number of fabric layers you are sewing, and always test your needle and stitch settings on a scrap first.
Should I prewash cotton flannel before sewing?
Yes, we recommend prewashing your fabric before cutting, as 100% cotton can shrink. Prewash and dry it using the same method you plan to use for the finished garment.
Do I need to match the windowpane plaid when cutting?
For the most polished result, we recommend matching the horizontal and vertical lines at prominent seams, pockets and front openings. Purchasing a little extra fabric can be helpful when pattern matching.
Does cotton flannel fray?
Like most woven cotton fabrics, the cut edges fray. Finishing your seams with a serger, zigzag stitch or another appropriate seam finish will help keep the inside of your garment neat and durable.
What does yarn-dyed mean?
Yarn-dyed means the individual yarns are coloured before the fabric is woven. Rather than being printed onto the surface, the mauve and orange windowpane pattern is created during weaving and is visible on both sides of the fabric.
We recommend prewashing before cutting, as 100% cotton may shrink. Machine wash in cold or warm water on a gentle cycle with similar colours. Tumble dry on low or hang to dry. Iron on a medium cotton setting if needed.
For best results, wash and dry the fabric using the same method you plan to use for the finished garment before beginning your project.
As this fabric is made from 100% cotton, some shrinkage may occur during the first wash.
Due to the different color variations of each monitor and mobile device, we cannot guarantee the color will exactly match what you see online.Looking for a sewing pattern? Browse our PDF sewing patterns for inspiration !
