The 158 Ghanaian Smock by Folkwear is inspired by the traditional loose-fitting smock originating in northern Ghana and now worn throughout many areas of West Africa. Known in Ghana by names including fugu and batakari, the garment is traditionally constructed from narrow strips of handwoven fabric.
Wedge-shaped godets are inserted below the chest to create the smock's distinctive flared silhouette. The design can be made using handwoven strips or regular fabric yardage cut or torn into strips and sewn together, making it an especially interesting project for weavers, textile artists and fabric lovers.
The smock is designed for both women and men, with the women's version featuring elastic at the waist. It can be worn over trousers, shorts, pants or leggings, and the women's version can also be lengthened to create a dress. A traditional-inspired kufi cap and embroidery motifs for embellishing the smock are also included.
