The 217 Poet's Shirt sewing pattern by Folkwear recreates the romantic shirts of the 1820s and 1830s, an era when poets such as Byron, Shelley and Keats wore their collars open in defiance of conventional fashion.

This unisex historical shirt is constructed primarily from rectangular pieces. Full sleeves with underarm gussets are gathered at the shoulders, while a straight collar falls back from a faced front slit opening. Small neck gussets shape and reinforce the shoulders, and optional side slits can be strengthened with additional gussets.

View A features a plain collar and narrow cuffs for a simple, versatile interpretation. View B adds a ruffle around the collar and front opening along with self-formed ruffle cuffs for a more romantic period look.

The pattern also includes a diagram for a traditional triangular cravat, instructions for tying it and historical detailing for recreating the openwork technique found on the collar of Folkwear's original garment.
