It was in the 19th century, after three centuries of sporadic or isolated initiatives, that the dawn of modern missions rose for the Churches born of the Reformation. Driven by the dual impetus of the evangelical Revivals and the taste for distant adventure that characterized the West at the time, the various components of Protestantism undertook to bring the Gospel to peoples who had remained apart from the first wave of Christian expansion (for the study of which, refer to the first volume of the Précis d'histoire des Missions : L'Évangélisation du monde). This missionary effort, supported by a multitude of mission societies formed for the occasion, established itself during this period as the great project of the Churches in the countries of North America and Europe. But the Mission was never solely the work of the "white man": very early in the history of the Missions, as the book shows, pioneers native to the Mission's host lands played a decisive role in building the Church.

These 150 years of unprecedented missionary activity, of which William Carey was the leading figure, have largely shaped the face of the Church today. The remarkable synthesis offered by Jacques Blandenier is a document without equivalent on the formation of Christianity in the countries of the Global South, which today brings together the majority of Christians. It should be noted that the author particularly focuses on highlighting the contribution of French-speaking Protestantism, whose limited numbers did not limit its zeal, to the missionary work in Africa and the Far East.
