“The Lady of the Camellias” is a novel about issues that few dared to discuss openly in the mid-19th century. It is a book about the love of the terminally ill Marguerite Gautier, a demi-mondaine, for the young and romantic Armand Duval—a love that is passionate, tragic, and doomed.
The story, inspired by the author’s feelings for Marie Duplessis, is a masterpiece of psychological literature of incomparable depth. The image of the Parisian courtesan was brought to the stage by the great actress Sarah Bernhardt and on screen by the world-famous star Greta Garbo. The premiere of the play based on the novel was attended by composer Giuseppe Verdi, who later composed his famous opera “La Traviata” inspired by “The Lady of the Camellias”.
