Steinberg Backbone is an advanced drum re-synthesizer and sound-design instrument built for creating kicks, snares, hi-hats, percussion, impacts, rises and experimental one-shot sounds. Up to eight samples can be layered within a single patch, with each layer independently shaped and processed.

Backbone can separate samples into tonal and noise components, allowing each element to be processed independently before being re-synthesized. One-shots and loops can be transformed far beyond conventional sample editing using spectral and pitch-based processing. Two fully routable effect buses provide additional processing, while direct audio export makes it easy to move finished sounds into a DAW.

Backbone also incorporates Sony CSL DrumGAN technology for generating new drum sounds using machine-learning-based synthesis.
