Faust (Blu-ray)

The devil wagers with an archangel that he can corrupt any human soul — and selects the aged alchemist Faust as his subject, offering him youth, power, and love in exchange for his immortal soul. F.W. Murnau's Faust: A German Folk Legend, made the same year as Sunrise, is the supreme achievement of German Expressionist cinema: a film of staggering visual invention, featuring some of the most breathtaking photography in silent-era film history. Emil Jannings plays the devil with gleeful grandeur; Gösta Ekman's Faust transforms before our eyes from a bent old man into a blazing young romantic.
