Tokyo Drifter - The Criterion Collection (Blu-ray)

Reformed hitman Tetsuya "Phoenix Tetsu" Hondo (Tetsuya Watari) tries to go straight when his boss dismantles their gang — but rival syndicate members won't let him walk away alive. Seijun Suzuki's Tokyo Drifter is one of cinema's great acts of formal exuberance: a yakuza film that uses its genre conventions as scaffolding for a delirious exercise in color, composition, and style, shifting between modes — pop musical, spaghetti Western, art film — with complete insouciance. Watari's snow-white suit has never looked more magnificent.
