Hana-bi (Blu-ray)

A burned-out detective (Kitano) retires from the force after devastating events — his partner is paralyzed in the line of duty, his wife is dying — and uses money borrowed from the yakuza to take her on one last trip across Japan. Takeshi Kitano's Golden Lion winner at Venice is his most emotionally tender and visually poetic film — violence and beauty held in perfect, devastating equilibrium.
