A family living in poverty on the fringes of Tokyo takes in an abandoned young girl and pulls her into their unusual, semi-criminal household — until an incident exposes the fragile fictions holding them together. Hirokazu Kore-eda's Palme d'Or winner at Cannes is his most moving and formally accomplished film: a work about chosen family, poverty, and the small cruelties of the Japanese welfare state.
