An aging warlord (Tatsuya Nakadai) divides his realm between his three sons, setting off a catastrophic civil war as ambition and treachery tear the family apart. Akira Kurosawa's final epic — loosely based on King Lear and shot over years with a cast of thousands — is a towering meditation on hubris, the destruction wrought by old men, and the indifference of heaven to human suffering. Emi Wada's extraordinary costumes won the Academy Award for Costume Design.
