In 1987 Hong Kong, the ghost of Fleur (Anita Mui) — a 1930s courtesan who died in a suicide pact with her lover — returns to search for him in the changed, unrecognizable city. Stanley Kwan's masterpiece of nostalgia and loss is at once a ghost story, a meditation on Hong Kong's vanishing past, and one of the most heartbreaking love stories in Chinese cinema, featuring a transcendent performance by Anita Mui. New 4K digital restoration for Criterion.
