Antique Horse of Marly Sculpture, signed 'Coustou,' attributed after Guillaume Coustou
Large antique European sculpture depicting the famous Horse Tamer (Cheval de Marly) after French sculptor Guillaume Coustou. This dramatic composition features a rearing horse restrained by its groom, inspired by the celebrated eighteenth-century statues originally created for the Château de Marly.
Cast in patinated spelter and signed “Coustou” on the base, this finely detailed sculpture dates to approximately 1880–1910 and was likely produced in Continental Europe for the decorative and Grand Tour market. The piece displays excellent detail throughout, from the horse’s flowing mane and musculature to the figure’s expressive pose and classical drapery.
The sculpture remains in good antique condition, showing age-related wear, oxidation, and patina loss consistent with its age. Please review all photos carefully for the complete condition.
